For more than three decades, Brad advised public and private companies’ managements and boards. A recognized leader in the property-casualty insurance business, he successfully dealt with some of the worst catastrophic losses recorded and serious litigation exposures.
Leadership
With decades of top-tier experience in the insurance industry, Brad has built an impressive career as a General Counsel, senior strategist and transformative executive. His leadership has been pivotal in driving operational excellence, financial growth, and innovative risk management across several renowned organizations.
Brad served as senior vice president and general counsel of OneBeacon Insurance Group from 2007 to 2013, concluding as the CEO of OneBeacon Insurance Company. After stepping down, he served for a decade as a senior consultant to the White Mountains Insurance Group which had been the controlling shareholder of OneBeacon.
At USAA from 1995 to 2004, he was executive vice president, general counsel & corporate secretary; and senior vice president, general counsel & corporate secretary, as well as a member of the executive council. During his tenure, he was instrumental in guiding a major corporate restructuring, reducing the workforce by more than 2,000 positions, and implementing process engineering to streamline operations.
Under his legal and strategic leadership, USAA retained its AAA debt rating, while growing pre-tax income, members’ equity, and assets exceeding $70 billion. He introduced innovative solutions for managing probable maximum loss risks in homeowners’ insurance and spearheaded technological investments and product enhancements to strengthen market competitiveness.
Prior to USAA, Brad was with ACE Limited from 1991 to 1995, serving as executive vice president and general counsel.
He led the company through a successful initial public offering and a subsequent secondary offering, while overseeing operations with $2.7 billion in assets and $1.4 billion in capital and surplus. His strategic acumen facilitated the acquisition of CODA, a specialist in directors’ and officers’ insurance, significantly increasing the company’s return on equity. Additionally, he directed the entire claims function in excess liability and excess D&O insurance.
From 1987 to 1991, Brad was senior vice president, claims litigation at Crum and Forster Corporation, where he spearheaded the resolution of high-profile claims, especially those involving FSLIC/FDIC negotiations related to failed savings and loan cases. He also led environmental claims, managing coverage determinations and litigation.
His early leadership experience included president & CEO of Albany Insurance Company & Atlas Assurance Company of America under Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance, where he profitably developed a new property-casualty company and integrated a major marine subsidiary, dramatically improving combined ratios.
Earlier roles included positions with the U.S. Air Force and as a staff assistant to the President of the United States in the Domestic Council.
Brad earned a J.D. with honors from George Washington University Law School and a B.A. with honors from Denison University.
He is admitted to practice law in Arizona, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia and various federal courts. His affiliations include the American Bar Association, International Association of Insurance Counsel and Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
